Transforming one of the early twentieth century crofthouses at Fernilea into a comfortable 21st century home for our clients and their young family, yet retaining its essential character and authenticity presented a demanding design challenge.
The interiors were extensively remodelled, and a “lean-to” extension, executed in the vernacular corrugated steel profile, wrapped around the stone gabled original.
Despite enlarging the living space by 80%, the scale and feel of this much cherished home, part of the 1920’s settlement of the Minginish peninsular of Skye by Harris migrants, remains intact. Whilst respecting its history and context, the clients have created a warm and welcoming modern home, offering new open plan spaces and views over croft and water.
